Trip Facts

  • Destination:Nepal
  • Trip Grade:Moderate

Traverse the Langtang valley to Kyangjin Gompa through colorful Tamang and Sherpa villages among a picturesque backdrop of the Langtang range and admire the stunning aqua hue of the holy lakes of Gosainkunda.

By adding a week to the Langtang trek it is possible to visit the sacred lakes at Gosainkunda, one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations outside the Kathmandu Valley for Hindu devotees. Gosainkunda is actually the largest of three main lakes, the other two being Saraswotikunda and Bhairavkunda. Hindu legend has it that the lakes were formed when the god Shiva plunged his trident (Trishul) into the ground to obtain water. The Trishuli River has its source in these lakes thus the name. The popular time for pilgrims is during the monsoon so trekkers are not likely to see too many people during the trekking season.

Starting at Dhunche the trail climbs steeply though rhododendron, oak and conifer forest to the monastery at Shin Gompa. Chauchan Bari, a few minutes beyond the Gompa, is the site of another cheese factory and has some teahouses. About an hour beyond Chauchan Bari the trail from Syabru joins the main trail and after another four hours the lakes are sighted. Along this section of trail there are impressive views of the mountains including the Manaslu, Ganesh and Langtang ranges. While the walk from Dhunche can easily be accomplished in two long days, the rapid gain in altitude will mean at least three days must be taken. Trekkers who are coming from Langtang will be well acclimatised and should have little problem.

To finish the trek, either return to Dhunche via Shin Gompa, or continue on to Helambu. The latter option crosses Laurebina La Pass, which at 4600 meters can be snowbound even during the trekking seasons.

We depart in the morning for a scenic drive through Nepal’s middle hills along the Trishuli River to Syabrubesi via Dhunche.

The first day of trekking begins along the rolling hillsides on a trail flanking the LangtangKhola. We’ll cross the river several times over suspension bridges as we meander through thick forests and meadows, encountering several rural hamlet along the way.

Continuing through the lush forests surrounding river valley, we ascend above the tree line for spectacular views of LangtangLirung. Cultural gems abound on our journey to Langtang Village as we pass by numerous chortens, prayer wheels, and mani stones carved with sacred mantras.

Our trail takes us through scenic meadows where wild yaks graze to the Nepal’s largest mani wall, a fascinating stone structure scrawled with inscriptions and festooned with prayer flags. Beautiful scenery abounds as we approach KyanjinGompa, with a Himalayan skyline surrounding us punctuated by glacial formations and rocky icefalls.

We make a steep ascent to the excellent lookout from TserkoRi this morning for an unforgettable sunrise. From this viewpoint we can see a vast expanse of the Langtang range, including LangtangLirung, Kinshung, YansaTsenji, and the base of the Lirung Glacier. We spend the day enjoying the views and ascend for another evening in KyanjinGompa.

Descending among the Langtang range’s majestic peaks into lush forests, we pass through several Tamang villages whose inhabitants share a distinctly Tibetan culture en route to Lama Hotel.

We descend to a river crossing through thick juniper forests this morning. Stunning mountain views accompany us throughout the day. Several moderate climbs and descents will bring us to Thulo Syabru.

A wide trail through oak, hemlock, and rhododendron forests takes us through Dimsa to Shin Gompa, a village known for the local cheese it produces.

We enter an area today that is known to be a sanctuary for the red panda, one of Nepal’s rare and endangered mammal species. Ascending through pine forests to Gosainkunda, we reach the fantastic surroundings of the beautiful Gosainkunda lakes. We have clear views of the impossibly azure waters mirroring the majestic peaks of the LangtangHimal. Ascend a stunning ridgeline to Gosainkunda.

An arduous journey across glacial moraines will take us across the Laurabina La, from where epic views of the surrounding valleys sprawl before us. We pass further through a craggy forested area via Phedi to Gopte.

Ascending through thick forests we arrive in a dry riverbed and reach Kharka. We ascend from here to TharePati, climbing further to a ridge where excellent views of the Jugal region await us. We descend from here to the Melamchiriver and make a final ascent to Melamchigaon.

We enter the Helambu region today, marked by the Sherpa influence in the villages nestled within the valley. We descend to TarkeGyang, an interesting village typical of Sherpa tradition, home to a monastery we can visit in the evening.

Traversing the picturesque Helambu valley, we pass Parachin to Gangyul, a village whose inhabitants practice the Bhutanese national religion of Drukpa Kagyu Buddhism. We take our time to explore the village before the final stretch to Sermethang.

We pass through a string of Sherpa settlement on our final day of walking to Melamchi Pull Bazaar. From here we board a bus or private van bound for Kathmandu.
